Last Year at Marienbad (L'Année dernière à Marienbad; Alain Resnais, 1961)

It is an ambiguous film with an open narrative structure. Its film editing and cinematography are still a reference for many directors: David Lynch and Peter Greenaway among others. The film continually creates ambiguity in the spatial and temporal sequences it shows, and spreads these fragmented informations stimulating the mental image of the spectator due to the causal relationships between events. The film is entirely located in Hotel Marienbad, a late baroque palace surrounded by an enormous garden. The architecture of this building and its characteristics are clearly mentioned during the plot. Hotel Marienbad only exists in the reality of the film. It is in fact a creation of the director and it is made of different buildings: real and artificial. In Munich I had the pleasure to visit most of the locations where the film was shot.
