Battleship Potemkin (Sergei Eisenstein, 1925; silent film with intertitles) with the live soundtrack composed and executed by Almeida's Kino Trio.
Battleship Potemkin is a Soviet film directed by Sergei Eisenstein in 1925. The title suggests the main location of the film, the Russian battleship Potemkin where a mutiny against the power of the officers took place in 1905. This event is considered one of the first steps towards the Revolution of 1917. The film explicitly refers to this event and aims to celebrate the power of the masses. The space of the ship is magnificently rendered through the complex film editing studied by Eisenstein. Even if the ship was isolated in the middle of the sea, “the spirit of revolution soared over the Russian land.”
The band Almeida's Kino Trio consists of: Nina Hits (cello), Gonçalo Almeida (bass), Philipp Ernsting (percussions).
